Another Women’s Champion Has Risen in China
Well what do you know? Someone else has taken over the spot as the top ranked women’s table tennis recently.
China looks like a powerhouse as they prepare for the Olympics. Many predict that they have the strongest team.
Nineteen-year-old Guo Yue, from China, gained the number one spot after China’s Zhang Yining was dropped to second ranked. Yining held the position ever since 2003.
I can probably bet the bank that Yue’s current ranking will not be challenged by someone who wants to be better. Let’s see how the year turns for the new champion!
This is huge because the ITTF Rankings for January 2008 will play a major part in the selection for the 2008 Olympic games held in Beijing. The top twenty players on the ranking list have earned exemption from participating in national or international tournaments.
But there’s a catch for this coveted position. A country can only allow two players from the list to take advantage of their rankings. Plus, players who can participate are subject to the approval of their country’s National Olympic Committee.
Overall, a country can only send three players to represent them. This means that China will have problems with their selection due to the tremendous talent they have. Yue and Yining have clichéd direct qualification while we wait on further results for the third spot.
On China’s Men’s circuit, Wang Hao and Ma Lin have clichéd their spots while Wang Liqin must qualify for the third spot
After the performance they displayed at the 2007 Volkswagen Tournament, I can see why some may feel as though they will dominate the competition. We will just have to patiently wait until the matches begin to see if it all comes true… ![]()
