History was made when Ma Long won the final point against his compatriot Xu Xin, to secure the Men’s Singles title at the ITTF Pro Tour Grand Finals in Macau on Sunday 10th January 2010.

China’s 21 year old Ma Long is the new no.1 ranked player on planet earth.
Previously listed at no.2 in December 2009, he changes places with compatriot Wang Hao, the reigning World champion on the World Rankings issued by the International Table Tennis Federation on Sunday 3rd January 2010.

Ma Long is the successor of Wang Hao. China’s 21 year old, world no.2, won the final of the Volkswagen 2009 Tournament of Champions in five games against Germany’s Timo Boll.
Boll was not without chance against the player considered as the best in the world. However, the German missed his chances in the close games and in the crucial moments.

The Chinese supporters suffered with their hero Wang Hao, but the reigning World champion is not in the form to beat Timo Boll. At least, Wang tried his best, saved a match point in the fifth game, but eventually lost 3-11 in the sixth game.
Wang Hao said at the press conference: “I don’t feel good about this result. The key point was that I didn’t do well.”

Winner of the Men’s Singles title at the English Open some three weeks earlier in the city of Sheffield; Ma Long was repeated that form to win the Men’s Singles title at the Asian Championships in Lucknow on Sunday 22nd November 2009.
He was as devastating as he had been in Sheffield with both Ma Long and his adversary giving total commitment just as Li Xiaoxia and Ding Ning had done before in the Women’s Singles final.

Europe overcame Asia in a fantastic duel that presented table tennis in best possible way. The high-class encounters of biggest stars of today provided great suspense, beautiful performance and thrillers turn on. At the end, it was Europe that succeeded in “overtime”. After 5:5 on aggregate and 20:20 in games Vladimir SAMSONOV kept his nerve and in 11th match of the Leg beat LI Ching.
The crucial moment was the great victory of Timo BOLL against top player at the World rankings Chinese star WANG Hao. Boll beat WANG in straight sets. “I even surprised myself with the performance. When I won the opening game I was not sure that I will manage to keep in the same rhythm until the end. I succeeded and that win gave us some extra confidence;” explained BOLL.

China’s Ma Long justified his top seeded billing in the Men’s Singles event at the English Open, by overcoming compatriot and no.3 seed Ma Lin at the final hurdle to clinch gold on Sunday 1st November 2009.
Ma Long continued the devastating form he had displayed throughout the whole tournament to beat Ma Lin a four straight games.

Wang Chen of the U.S. advanced further than any player ever had but fell short of a victory in the quarter final round against a talented Li Jia Wei from Singapore. Wang had secured her spot in the quarter’s after defeating South Korea’s Kim Kyung-Ah 11-9, 9-11, 11-8, 10-12, 6-11, 11-9, 11-5. Wang fell to her knees in tears of joy after the victory.
The 34-year-old Wang did not appear to have the skills to knock off Wei in the biggest match of her life. Wang, came to Beijing ranked 23rd in the world vs. Wei who is seven years her junior and came into the tournament ranked sixth in the world. Wang fought hard but simply did not seem to have the tools, she eventually lost 15-13, 11-6, 12-10, 13-15, 11-4.

Wang Chen of the U.S. defeated Kim Kyung-ah of South Korea on Thursday becoming the first American in Olympic table tennis history to make it to the quarterfinals. She accomplished this in 7 sets winning 4-3 over Kim who happens to be the world’s top defensive player. Wang battled hard and earned her spot in U.S. table tennis history and the emotion showed following the match.
“I thought it was possible to beat her as long as I was full of confidence, because she is a defensive player.” said Wang. She won in a close and dynamic performance 11-9, 9-11, 11-8, 10-12, 6-11, 11-9, 11-5.
