Germany pushes past Japan

August 16, 2008
Germany was able to push past Japan on Saturday with a 3-2 victory sealing a spot for them in the final.  Germany looked strong but will have to play even stronger in the final where they will face either China or South Korea.

The first game was between one of Germany’s up and coming stars Dimitrij Ovtcharov vs. Kan Yo of Japan.  Dimitrij squeaked past Kan leaving his experienced teammate with the momentum going into his match.  The German veteran Timo Boll was able to silence Japan’s teenage wonder Jun Mizutani.

Although the Germans were off to a strong start the Japanese were not through battling. The doubles play between Jun and Seiya Kishikawa of Japan vs. Ovtcharov and Christian Suss of Germany found the Japanese victorious in the end.  This win for Japan set up a spectacle and exciting finale between the two countries.

Kan Yo, a former paddler for China was able to even the score by beating Suss in a grueling five-sets before the strong German Timo Boll used his experience and consistent play to defeat Kishikawa and ultimately give Germany the victory over Japan.  Boll was so elated in fact that he dropped to the ground nearly shedding tears of joy.
