How To Scout The Competition Effectively
Recently I was asked, “How can a person scout out the table tennis competition effectively?”
While not the hardest question to answer, it can be very complex. I had to physically show this person how one can do so.
To give you some strategies on how to really scout your opponents, here are a few questions to ask yourself when faced with an opponent you’ve never played against before:
• Footwork
Can the player move side to side quickly? Does the player reach for the ball or do they step into the shot? How often does the player step to the side and use their forehand or backhand?
• Shot Placement
Where do the majority of the player’s shots ends up at on the table? How does the player react when the ball is played close to the net or deep on the table? Where does this player’s serve usually head?
• Secret Weapons
What are the player’s best shots? When does the player use their weapon during a match. How often do they use their weapons? Where is the ball on the table before the player executes their weapon?
• Concentration
Does the player have lots of comebacks? How does the player react when faced with a long rally? How good is the player’s score control? Can the player raise their level of play? Does the player handle pressure well?
These questions can be answered by close examination of their previous matches.
The key here is to force yourself into studying one player at a time and taking mental notes throughout your scouting.
You’ll notice that playing against the opponent will be a little easier than just playing them out of instincts.
