Mastering Your Serve Part II

Back-Spin Serve

The back-spin serve is often also referred to as the under-spin serve. This serve can be highly effective against aggressive players eager to attack your serve and it can be useful against less experienced ones as well.

One critical component to remember for all spinning serves is that the stronger the spin, the tougher it is for the opponent to negotiate a strong return.

A heavy-spun backspin has a promising chance of becoming a lost point by the opponent. This serve can be the most difficult to attack for your opponent.

Training Tips

First off, remember to keep it fun, try finding some cool serves to experiment with.

For example, try introducing a high, heavy backspin serve that bounces on your side near the net, on the opponent’s side near the net, and goes back over to your side.

This little trick will provide you with the sharp control that you will need as you begin to tackle the more accomplished players.

One more to trick to try your hand at is this; hit the heavy backspin so it lands at various hard angles on the table with such a wicked spin that it crawls back to you instead of dropping off the edge.

Bonus Trick

Mix up serves of different length and spin. Some examples of advanced serves include medium-long, deep, short, down-the-line, pure spin, pure speed, etc.

Serves to the elbow of your opponent tend to be very effective, since the receiver must quickly decide (and often does not in time) to use a forehand or backhand.

On the same note, push your serves to the opposing players mid section, keep them moving so you can more readily drop the kill shot on them!

Conclusion

A talented table tennis player can serve the ball with a back-spin powerful enough to give your opponent a scare and slow down their return.

The motto is always this; the cliché that rings so true every time, practice, practice, practice.

The heavier you practice the stronger your play, variations on your service skills can lead to more victories than you might imagine.

Likewise, being able to return such serves requires a player to carefully observe how the ball comes off the opponents paddle; always keep your eye on your adversaries service.

Playing to your opponent’s weaknesses by pushing different serves is a good strategy to use in every match.
