China’s 21 year old Ma Long is the new no.1 ranked player on planet earth.

Previously listed at no.2 in December 2009, he changes places with compatriot Wang Hao, the reigning World champion on the World Rankings issued by the International Table Tennis Federation on Sunday 3rd January 2010.

Ma Long is the successor of Wang Hao. China’s 21 year old, world no.2, won the final of the Volkswagen 2009 Tournament of Champions in five games against Germany’s Timo Boll.

Boll was not without chance against the player considered as the best in the world. However, the German missed his chances in the close games and in the crucial moments.

The Chinese supporters suffered with their hero Wang Hao, but the reigning World champion is not in the form to beat Timo Boll. At least, Wang tried his best, saved a match point in the fifth game, but eventually lost 3-11 in the sixth game.

Wang Hao said at the press conference: “I don’t feel good about this result. The key point was that I didn’t do well.”

Winner of the Men’s Singles title at the English Open some three weeks earlier in the city of Sheffield; Ma Long was repeated that form to win the Men’s Singles title at the Asian Championships in Lucknow on Sunday 22nd November 2009.

He was as devastating as he had been in Sheffield with both Ma Long and his adversary giving total commitment just as Li Xiaoxia and Ding Ning had done before in the Women’s Singles final.
