The Boxer

Here’s a great training tip to help you get out of lazy footwork in your game…

Most kids when they start playing seriously when they’re young (of course it also depends on the coach and how he trains them) are trained to spar like a boxer.

I don’t mean they do the same exercises, but that their positioning and movement is similar.

Just as one would practice sparring in boxing, you want to spar in ping pong. This exercise is similar to when you have to move left or right across the table but we’re going to do it in the same position.

Using only forehand so that normally you would be more or less pretty stable in your movement, keep your feet bouncing on every hit and continue shifting your feet back and forth and also shifting the weight from right to left, pretending you’re a boxer.

You want your swing hand to be moving the same way as your feet - your whole body synchronized.

Your paddle should hit the ball the exact same time your feet touch the ground, and as they turn left or right, your body and swing turns with them.

This will not only help your endurance and quicken your feet, but it will help you get out of the habit of “flat feet”.

If you practice this, you’ll always be on the move and be ready for anything that comes your away. And you’ll get a great workout.
