Towards the end of last year the ping pong movie, Balls of Fury hit theatres spreading the sport to an audience who might not know a thing about ping pong. This ping pong movie serves as one of the first of its kind, following the success of other genres of sports in movies. Other movies that feature the sport include Forest Gump. The main character picks up the sport “by accident” and becomes a world champion. He would later travel around the world demonstrating his ping pong prowess. However, it wasn't a true ping pong movie.
The ping pong movie, Ball of Fury, stars Dan Fogler, Christopher Walken, and George Lopez. It is based off the movie, Enter the Dragon, starring Bruce Lee. The plot to this ping pong movie features a ping pong champ named Randy Daytona. Hired by the FBI, he's given a secret mission to bring down one of the FBI's most wanted criminal named Feng. Believing that the criminal is responsible for his father's death, Daytona enters into an important ping pong tournament to capture Feng.
This ping pong movie has to be one the funniest movies of the year. It's interesting play between martial arts and ping pong makes this a ping pong movie you must see to believe. Even though the shots featured in the ping pong movie is staged, it's still refreshing that “Hollywood” would consider ping pong for part of the plot. Following on the lines of BeerFest and Dodgeball, this ping pong movie will have you cracking up from the crazy antics the characters do. It's great for bringing the whole family along or simply watching it after playing ping pong.
Hopefully in the future, there will be other ping pong movies that focus on the serious side of the sport. However, it's very refreshing to finally see a ping pong movie in the first place.
