Why Play Outdoor Table Tennis?

Table tennis, or ping pong as it is called more informally, is usually considered an indoor sport, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be played outside. Many players report actually report preferring outdoor table tennis to the indoor variety.

Outdoor Table Tennis: Pros

Outdoor table tennis offers a freedom that indoor table tennis may not. You have more space to run for shots without having to worry about slamming face-first into a rec room wall.

Another advantage of outdoor table tennis is that you can literally play anywhere. For instance, if you want the fun of ping pong and the gentle resistance of water aerobics, Overton’s offers a floating table tennis top, made primarily of foam except for the table top, which is hard enough to support fun game play. The set comes with three balls and two floating paddles.

Outdoor Table Tennis: Cons

If you have harsh winters, remember that you will only be able to enjoy outdoor table tennis six to nine months out of the year. During those other months, you’ll have to find another way to exercise and keep in shape.

If you are a tournament player, remember that most tournaments are held indoors. You don’t necessarily want to get yourself into the habit of taking the wind and the other elements into consideration in your play when these elements will not be present during tournaments.

Indoor vs. Outdoor Tables

If you prefer outdoor table tennis, you need to decide whether you want to purchase an indoor table and move it outside when you are in the mood for a game or whether you want to purchase an outdoor table that can withstand the elements.

Outdoor ping pong tables are made from sturdy materials that can hold up against the worst nature throws at it: rain, sleet, snow, blazing hot sunlight, etc. Most outdoor tables are made of aluminum. For added protection, consider purchasing a table covering.

Table tennis fans, especially those who play professionally, are not always keen on outdoor tables. They complain that the surfaces are slower and that it is harder to put a spin on the ball. If you still want to play outdoor table tennis, one possible solution in buying an indoor table and moving it outdoors when you are ready to play.

Another advantage to buying an indoor table is that if you have cold or rainy seasons, you can still play in the house when the weather isn’t cooperating and move the table outside on nice days. Of course if you decide to go with this option, you will need to buy a portable ping pong table that can be folded and moved easily.

There are many benefits to outdoor table tennis, but there are some drawbacks as well. It’s important to talk all these issues through with your family and ascertain their goals before making a final decision about where the table will go and whether or not you need an indoor or an outdoor table.
